Film

Films are an important part of the Festival's schedule and the selection we are showing this year is very varied so there's something for everyone, whatever your age! They all have green themes, and range from a fascinating short about one local family's sustainable lifestyle in Chorlton to a full-length feature explaining the implications of the decline of bees on a global scale. Screenings will start at 5.30pm in the School Hall and Scout Hut – Vanishing of the Bees 5.30 - 7.00pm School Hall, Glocal 6.00-7.05pm Scout Hut and Sisters on the Planet 7.10 - 7.30pm Scout Hut.

Vanishing of the Bees
Running time: approx 90 minutes

Vanishing of the Bees is an eye-opening account of the shocking truth behind the declining global bee population.

The UK cinema release of this film last October was backed by The Co-operative as part of its Plan Bee campaign and 10-point plan to help reverse the worrying loss of UK bees. The campaign aims to make a difference through action on pesticides, work with farms, funding research and education of individuals and groups. Through Plan Bee, we’re able to show Vanishing of the Bees as part of our festival screenings.

The screening of Vanishing of the Bees will be followed by a talk from John Charlton of Manchester Beekeepers.

Glocal
Running time: approx 30 minutes

Glocal is a short film telling the story of an American family’s move to Chorlton and their attempt to lead a more sustainable existence. Giving up a gas-guzzler for a bunch of bikes, swapping supermarkets for local shops and foregoing fast food in favour of homegrown produce, the Heies show how easy it is to break free from the consumption-obsessed lifestyle so common in the West.

Glocal challenges the viewer to be more aware of the impact of their daily routine on their health, the environment and even international relations. The film was made by Jeff Heie, one of the organisers of Chorlton’s Big Green Festival, so you may even spot some of the stars as you wander round the site!

Sisters on the Planet
Running time: approx 20 minutes

Four short films make up Sisters On The Planet, a documentary highlighting the destructive impact climate change is having in different communities around the globe. This inspirational film, made by Oxfam, follows four women from countries in both the developed and the developing world and reveals the efforts each is making to tackle global warming.
